What is balayage?

Balayage comes from the French word for “sweeping”: the colour is painted onto the hair by hand instead of being applied in rigid foil sections. This creates a soft, natural blend from dark to light, just as the sun would lighten your hair. Because the regrowth is gradual, balayage is also low-maintenance.

Our Brazilian approach is all about depth and dimension. We look at your skin tone, your natural colour and how you wear your hair, and place the light exactly where it makes your face glow.

Colour services at Maria Bonita Hair

  • Balayage – hand-painted, natural highlights.
  • Morena iluminada – the Brazilian technique for luminous brown hair.
  • Full colour and colour correction – from a new base colour to a complete transformation.
  • Toner and gloss – for a fresh tone and extra shine between colour appointments.

Morena iluminada: Brazilian balayage for brown hair

In Brazil, morena iluminada – literally “illuminated brunette” – is a household name. It is the technique for women with dark hair who want more light and warmth without going blonde.

The result: brown hair with soft caramel, honey or chocolate tones that catch the light. The base stays dark and rich, while the lighter accents add movement and a sun-kissed glow.

Morena iluminada looks beautiful with warm or olive skin and suits anyone who wants little upkeep: the regrowth is barely noticeable.

Torn between balayage and morena iluminada? During the colour consultation we look at examples and choose the technique that suits you together.

How your colour appointment works

  1. Colour consultation – we discuss what you want, look at your hair and skin tone and create a colour plan.
  2. Allergy test – for new clients or a new colour product, we do a small skin test 48 hours in advance.
  3. Painting and processing – the colour is applied by hand; allow 3 to 5 hours in total.
  4. Toner and care – we fine-tune the shade and give your hair a nourishing treatment.
  5. Blow-dry and aftercare advice – you leave with a radiant result and tips to keep your colour looking beautiful.

Results and maintenance

After the treatment you have a soft, natural colour with depth and shine. Because balayage grows out gradually, you do not need to come back every few weeks. A toner or gloss after 6 to 8 weeks keeps the shade fresh; after 3 to 4 months we refresh the balayage.

At home, use a colour-protecting, sulphate-free shampoo and protect your hair from heat. Want less frizz and more shine as well? Combine your colour with a keratin treatment or a haircut with a Brazilian blow-dry.

Frequently asked questions about balayage

How long does a balayage take?

Allow 3 to 5 hours, depending on the length and thickness of your hair and the result you want. Because the colour is applied by hand, balayage is precision work. While it processes, you can sit back and relax.

How much does balayage cost?

The price depends on your hair length, thickness and the technique. A first balayage takes more time than a refresh. Send us a photo of your hair and what you would like via WhatsApp and you will receive a personal price estimate.

Is balayage bad for your hair?

Any colour treatment asks something of your hair, but with balayage only part of the hair is coloured and we work with nourishing products. With the right care at home, your hair stays healthy and glossy.

What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

Classic highlights are applied with foils in regular sections from the root. With balayage we paint the colour by hand and let it blend softly, usually from the mid-lengths. The result looks more natural and the regrowth is less visible.

Why is an allergy test needed?

Hair dye can cause an allergic reaction, even if you have coloured your hair before without any problems. That is why, for new clients or a new colour product, we do a small skin test 48 hours beforehand. That way you can be sure you are colouring safely.
